Mike has his fair share of haters, as do most ‘Insta trainers’ as they are known.
He is often trolled, with one of the most common insults being that he is allegedly on steroids.
Or that he previously used steroids in the past.
It doesn’t take long to find a steroid accusation or two when you scroll through the comments section of his posts, but is Mike Thurston on steroids or natural, and do these accusations have any merit?
First, let’s learn more about how Mike got to be where he is today.
Mike grew up in the North of England, in the county of Yorkshire.
A Leeds lad born and bred, Mike had a happy and productive childhood.
He had a passion for sports and fitness from an early age.
And once he made it to high school.
He found that he enjoyed P.E (Physical Education) the most of all and listed it as his favorite subject.
He played a number of sports including athletics, football, cricket, and rugby.
He was a very talented athlete.
Though it was clear that rugby was his passion.
If you’re familiar with rugby, you’ll know what big units rugby players are.
They need to be big, strong, bulky.
And athletic because that is what their sport requires.
Mike was a fairly skinny kid at school.
And he was envious of the bigger kids and wanted to bulk up.
Getting involved in rugby gave him the perfect excuse to lift weights and bulk up.
So that’s what he started to do.
At college, he continued to play rugby.
And by 18 he was really taking his training seriously.
And he was adding some decent size to his physique as well.
He studied business management and economics and moved even further up north.
Where he studied at Newcastle.
As he played rugby, however, he found that, actually, he wasn’t as passionate about the sport as he was for training for the sport.
He preferred training in the gym to playing rugby in the cold and wet fields of Newcastle.
He decided to quit rugby and instead focus solely on sculpting his physique.
The problem, however, was that like most students.
Mike found it tough to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Sure, he was training in the gym.
And he tried to watch what he was eating.
But the party lifestyle of student life took hold.
And he would often drink excessively at least twice per week, if not more.
With the alcohol came the junk food, and the hangovers.
So his training suffered, as did his physique.
Due to alcohol and junk.
He was consuming, along with the late nights, lack of sleep, and lack of motivation.
Mike resigned himself to the fact that he’d never make it as a bodybuilder.
He decided to continue training and actually made good progress over the next three years.
In 2011, Mike graduated from University and at 21.
He made the decision to head out to Spain to promote bars and nightclubs.
From his perspective, this made perfect sense.
He was young, good-looking, enjoyed partying.
And no doubt enjoyed the company of the women as well.
Needless to say, while in Spain sleep alluded him.
And he partied far too much and drank even more.
He did, however, try to eat fairly clean and train hard during the day.
So he was still in better condition than 90% of the guys out there.
He spent one summer in Spain but decided to return to the UK and promoted bars and clubs in Newcastle.
He decided that late nights didn’t agree with him so landed himself the manager’s job at a retail store.
The pay was decent, the hours were better.
But he knew something was missing.
The biggest downside was that, as he worked during the day and finished fairly late.
He didn’t have much time to train, and when he did, he didn’t have the energy.
He knew that fitness was the key to his happiness.
So he decided that he would do whatever it took to make it in the fitness industry.
By the time he was 23, Mike set out to train to become a personal trainer.
He studied intensively and soon earned his qualifications.
He was now a fully-qualified PT.
Mike quit his retail job and focussed on his fitness career.
He stopped partying, he ate right, got more sleep, and trained like a madman.
He, along with two friends, formed his very own fitness company.
He posted his progress on Instagram, gained a lot of followers.
And was even approached by the supplement company EHP Labs.
Who signed him up to a sponsorship deal.
So, we’ve looked at how Mike got started in the fitness industry.
Now we’ll take a look at whether we believe he is natural, or if he is on steroids or ever has used steroids to build his physique.
Remember, this is pure speculation on our part.
So just bear that in mind when reading.
Here are some pieces of evidence for and against potential steroid use on Mike’s part:
One of the best ways of checking whether or not an individual may be on steroids or not is to look at how big they are.
Some bodybuilders, for example, stand at around 5ft 10 in height such as Mike Rashid, yet they weigh close to 300 pounds of pure beef, with barely an ounce of fat on them.
The human body is simply not designed to be this size naturally.
Which is why a building that much muscle naturally would be virtually impossible.
If you look at Mike, you can see the lifts weights and takes his training seriously.
However, he is hardly a big, jacked, 300-pound bodybuilder.
In fact, he weighs significantly less than that.
As he averages between 205 pounds in weight and 215 pounds.
Remember, he is six-foot-tall, so to weigh 200 pounds naturally is not unreasonable.
In fact, on paper, he is average at these stats hardly scream ‘steroids’ at you.
If you saw him, you’d be convinced that he was bigger, but he is hardly enormous.
To get to his size naturally at his height is hardly an unreasonable ask.
So just bear that in mind the next time somebody accuses him of being ‘too big to be natural’.
Aside from the obvious of looking like a genetic mutant.
Another good way of telling whether or not an individual may be using steroids or not is to look for a few common giveaway signs of steroid use.
If a man has puffy nipples and fatty deposits around his chest, despite being very lean, this could be gyno or gynecomastia.
This is caused when testosterone from the steroids aromatizes and converts into estrogen.
Acne on the face and body is also a giveaway.
Along with overly developed deltoids and traps.
This is because this is where the most androgen receptors are in the body.
Which is why steroid users often have such overly developed deltoids.
There are plenty of pics and vids of Mike out there with no shirt on.
And he has virtually so signs of steroid use at all.
This doesn’t mean that he is steroid-free of course.
As he could still be running a weaker steroid at low doses.
Though it is hardly likely.
Mike has always been roughly the same size since he was in his early twenties like Mike O'hearn who was really big when he was 14year old.
When partying and drinking he was a big dude.
Though he looks much bigger nowadays, which is largely because he is shredded.
He hasn’t undergone any dramatic transformations where he gained upwards of 40 pounds in less than a year.
But he has managed to get himself absolutely shredded.
In the pics of him shredded, he looks even bigger than when he was bulking, despite him being lighter.
This is because muscle definition gives the impression of the muscles being bigger than they actually are.
Talking of being shredded, Mike really got himself into amazing shape when he took his training and diet seriously.
He got down well into the single digits for body fat and maintained this condition for many months. Maintaining this condition is very tough.
Especially if you are natural.
So, did Mike do it the hard way?
Or did he have help from powerful fat-burning steroids?
Mike has competed as a bodybuilder several times in the past.
Where he competed in the WBFF.
Unfortunately, this organization does not drug test its athletes.
So we have no idea whether he was on gear or whether he was natty.
Based on the info above, and what we know about Mike.
We believe him to be a natural bodybuilder who has built his physique without the help of anabolic compounds.
Therefore the verdict is natty.
