Who Was Muhammad Ali?
Muhammad Ali is a man that surely needs no introduction, but just to be sure, we’re going to give him one anyway.
Muhammad Ali, formerly known as Cassius Clay, was a former professional boxer, a human rights activist, a philanthropist, motivational speaker, and all-around fantastic showman and entertainer.
He is widely known as ‘the greatest’ and would often refer to himself as such.
Renowned for his amazing footwork in the ring, his technical boxing ability, his legendary rivalries, and his trash-talking, Ali was certainly one of the world’s greatest boxers and is considered to be one of the best to ever lace up the gloves.
Cassius Marcellus Clay Jnr was born on January 17th, 1942, in Louisville Kentucky.
At school he was fairly bright academically, but would often find himself distracted and falling into the wrong crowds and getting in trouble with the law.
After having his bike stolen as a 12-year old, Ali told the investigating officer that he was going to beat the thief up.
The police officer, a man named Joe.
E Martin, was also a boxing coach in his free time, and he instructed Ali to redirect his anger and channel it through boxing.
Eventually, Ali, who was still known as Cassius Clay, took up boxing and instantly became natural.
In 1954 he made his amateur debut and won by split decision. From there, the wins just kept coming.
Pro Boxing Career
After racking up plenty of victories, Clay eventually turned pro in 1960, defeating Tunney Hunsaker in his debut.
He would go on to defeat many others, though it was the title fight against Sonny Liston in 1963, that really put Clay on the map.
Clay defeated Liston for the title aged just 22, and after a barrage of verbal abuse during the weigh ins, it was clear that Clay also knew how to get into the heads of his opponents.
From reading some of the Muhammad Ali quotes we have for you today, you’ll see that he had a way with words like no other.
After the fight, and now a household name, Cassius Clay converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali.
He would go on to face several formidable opponents in classics, including the ‘Fight of the Century’ against Joe Frazer, and the Rumble in the Jungle against George Foreman.
Sadly, Ali retired in 1981, and in 1984 was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Syndrome, which many believe was due to the amount of shots he took to the head.
Muhammad Ali passed away on June 3rd, 2016, aged 74 from Septic Shock.
He left behind a legacy the likes of which we may never see again in any sport.
