24 Influential Wrestling Quotes From Brock Lesnar

As you probably know, professional wrestling nowadays is a far cry away from what it was several decades ago.

The world of pro wrestling is one which not everybody gets, but those that do can truly appreciate it for what it is.

Best described as ‘sports entertainment’ professional wrestling has come on leaps and bounds, and while nowadays it is dominated by the WWE, many expect that to soon change with the emergence of AEW.

But what can we learn from pro wrestling? Well, we know never to turn our backs on our opponents, we know to steer clear of announcing tables and folding chairs, and we know not to trust anybody.

As entertaining as wrestling is, it is also inspiring, which is why we’ve compiled this list of wrestling quotes for you to enjoy today.

Before that, though, here is a brief look at wrestling history.

What Is Professional Wrestling?

First and foremost, you need to know the differences between professional wrestling and amateur wrestling.

Amateur wrestling, like that which you see in high schools, colleges, and the Olympic Games, is a recognized sport. Not more, no less.

Pro wrestling is known as ‘sports entertainment’. It is a combination of choreography, soap opera storylines, athleticism, brute strength, aggression, and technical wrestling ability.

Many use the term “fake” when describing wrestling, but we disagree. Every single move that you see is real. Every single ‘bump’ that a pro wrestler takes is real, and what you are seeing is all real.

Sure, the endings are pre-determined, the matches are often choreographed, and the rivalries aren’t real, but when pro wrestlers entertain you each week, every time they perform they are putting their lives on the line.

Pro Wrestling In The Modern Era

If you want to trace the origins of pro wrestling for entertainment purposes, you’d have to go back to the late 19th century, to carnivals and funfairs.

Here, wrestling “matches” were predetermined, though not very many members of the public knew this, and thought it was legit.

Fast forward to the USA in the 1970s and all of a sudden we found former amateur wrestlers with sporting backgrounds getting into the sport.

Now, a pro wrestling promoter named Vincent J McMahon started his own wrestling promotion named the World Wide Wrestling Federation, or WWWF for short.

Now, there is a lot of history here, but as we’re keeping it brief we’ll simply tell you that the WWWF became the WWF in 1979.

During the 1980s, the WWF grew in terms of popularity thanks to superstars like Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, and so on.

Vince’s son, Vince Jnr, took over in the 80s and turned the company into a global name. Vincent Kennedy McMahon was able to build the WWF into a global brand that would continue to expand well into the 90s.

During the 90s, the WWF’s main rivals were WCW, or World Championship Wrestling.

The two companies held their weekly shows on a Monday night, sparking what is known as the Monday Night Wars.

WCW was beating the WWF for viewers until the WWF created the Attitude Era.

Now, stars like Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, Brock Lesnar, the Undertaker, Mankind, The New Age Outlaws, and many others, were able to create edgier content.

The WWF would target younger audiences and would often go with risqué storylines, brutal matches, colourful language, and mature themes.

The WWF won the war, and in 2001, McMahon purchased WCW.

Shortly afterwards, after losing a court battle against the World Wildlife Fund, the WWF was forced to become the WWE.

For years, they faced no real competition and became complacent.

Fans started to grow tired, and with no real stars, they looked elsewhere.

In 2019, All Elite Wrestling was born.

The brainchild of Cody Rhodes, the Young Bucks, and Adam Page, AEW was funded by billionaire Shahid Khan and his son, Tony, and so far it is proving incredibly popular.

Securing a multi-year TV deal with TNT, AEW features stars such as Chris Jericho, Cody Rhodes, the Young Bucks, Matt Hardy, Jon Moxley (formerly Dean Ambrose) Dustin Rhodes (formerly Gold Dust) and many more.

Now they compete with the WWE’s NXT brand on a Weds night, in what many are calling the Wednesday Night Wars, and for pro wrestling fans, things are certainly looking bright for the future.
